Working in Monroe
Monroe was incorporated in 1843 as the county seat and sits in the Charlotte metro area southeast of the city. Inside the city limits, the City of Monroe Permit Center and its Building Standards division issue the permits and do the inspections under the North Carolina State Building Code, with inspection requests due by 3 pm the business day before. The city enforces the 2017 NC Electrical Code for residential work and the 2020 code for commercial work. Outside the city limits, Union County handles permits through its own online plan review and permitting service. We pull the permit with whichever office covers your address.
Monroe is one of the few cities in the area that runs its own electric utility. The City of Monroe Energy Services Department has supplied electricity in and around the city since January 1900 and owns and operates its own substations and lines. Beyond the city system, Union Power Cooperative serves much of the county. A service upgrade or a new meter base needs the utility to disconnect and reconnect, so tell us who sends your bill and we coordinate it.
Generator hookups, EV chargers, panel upgrades and remodel wiring all need a permit and an inspection in Monroe. We do the work to code, pull the permit as the contractor and meet the inspector, so the paperwork is ours and not yours.
