What smoke and CO detector installation costs

Most smoke detectors and combination smoke/CO detectors we install run $149 to $199 each, installed. What moves the price inside that range:

  • The detector. A smoke-only detector costs less than a combination smoke/CO detector.
  • Replace or add. Swapping an old hardwired detector is quicker than running a new wire to a spot that has none.

This is a typical range, not a quote. You get a written price for your house before any work starts.

Where smoke and CO detectors go

Our rule of thumb is at least one detector on every floor. Fire safety guidance goes further:

  • Smoke detectors: in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement.
  • Carbon monoxide detectors: outside each sleeping area and on every level, in any home with gas or propane appliances, a fireplace or an attached garage.

A combination smoke/CO detector covers both jobs in one unit, which keeps the number of devices on the ceiling down.

How detector installation with J&E works

  1. Tell us about the house. Send the form or call. Tell us how many floors and bedrooms you have, and whether the detectors you have now are hardwired or battery only.
  2. Walkthrough. We walk the house with you and mark where each detector should go.
  3. Written estimate before work starts. You get the number of detectors, the type and a written price. Nothing begins until you approve it.
  4. Installation. Our own licensed electricians install the detectors and test each one.

Adding detectors is often part of a bigger job, such as a panel upgrade or rewiring an older house. We can include them in the same estimate.

What customers say about this work

Kirby arrived early and greeted me with a smile. I showed him what needed to be done and he got right to it. He was respectful of our home and thoroughly answered my questions about what he was doing. I’m so that we hired J & E Electric to replace our smoke detectors. I’ll definitely be using them in the future for all of our electrical needs.
