Working in Waxhaw
Waxhaw was incorporated in 1889 and takes its name from the Waxhaw people who lived here first; Andrew Jackson was born nearby in 1767, and the two Carolinas still argue over which side of the line. The 2020 census counted 20,534 people, more than double the 9,859 of 2010. The downtown is a National Register historic district, and almost everything around it is new: subdivisions built in the last fifteen years, which have their own electrical list.
Waxhaw is one of two towns in Union County that issue their own building permits. Building Inspections, a division of the Town of Waxhaw Planning and Inspections Department, administers the North Carolina building codes through permit issuance and inspections, with requests submitted through the town's permit portal; inspection requests in before 4 pm are scheduled for the next business day. Outside the town limits, in Weddington, Marvin and Mineral Springs, Union County Building Code Enforcement issues the permit. We pull it under our North Carolina license, 27147-U, with whichever office covers your address.
Union Power Cooperative, headquartered in Monroe, serves much of Union County, and Duke Energy serves other parts. A service upgrade or a new meter base needs the utility to disconnect and reconnect, so tell us who sends your bill and we coordinate it.
In the newer subdivisions the common jobs are the ones the builder left out: an EV charger in the garage, a standby generator, circuits for a finished basement or bonus room, outdoor lighting and outlets, and hot tub or pool wiring once the yard is done.
