Working in York
York started as Fergus's Crossroads, became Yorkville when it was made the county seat in 1785, was incorporated in 1841 and shortened its name to York in 1915. The 2020 census counted 8,503 people. Downtown York is a National Register historic district of 340 acres with more than 180 historic structures, so a lot of the houses we work in are old, and old houses mean old wiring, small panels and outlets that were never grounded.
Inside the city limits, the City of York Planning and Development Department coordinates building permits, inspections and code enforcement, and takes permit applications and fees online through its Evolve system. Outside the city, York County Building and Codes handles it. We pull the permit under our license, M110118, with whichever office covers your address, and we meet the inspector.
Duke Energy provides power in York County, and York Electric Cooperative, which is headquartered in York, serves a large share of the county outside the cities. A service upgrade, a new meter base or a panel move needs the utility to disconnect and reconnect, so tell us who sends your bill and we handle that side.
On a historic house we plan around the building: surface-run conduit where the walls cannot be opened, a new panel where the old fuse box or split-bus panel is, and grounded outlets room by room.
